This course explores the physical and human geography of the Azores and Lisbon, Portugal, from the active volcanic landscapes of the central Atlantic Ocean’s Azorean island chain, to the development of Lisbon as the capital of a vast colonial empire and global trading network and as a European cultural capital. Course readings, activities, and excursions will be selected to complement the course themes. This course can be taken for either undergraduate (GEOG 291) or graduate (GEOG 891) credit.
